CHAPTER FOURTEEN

All the guests were present when we sat down to breakfast the next morning. It was buffet style again, but we showed up at the same time as everyone else. We stood in line at the rolling table, grabbing eggs, bacon, sausage from the heated trays.

“Hot springs today,” Marcia said to Meg as they sat down.

“I’ll need some relaxation before the shareholders’ meeting,” Emma said, following behind. “You want to come, Gloria?”

Gloria sat with Steven. She looked up, surprised. “Why, that sounds nice. I think I will.”

“We should go, too,” Nanna whispered. “Listen in on the girl talk.”

“I didn’t bring a swimsuit,” I said.

Nanna gawped. “You went on vacation without a swimsuit? What kind of vacation is that?”

“One where the high temperatures reach a few degrees above freezing,” I said.

“There’s always a place to swim,” Nanna said. “You did say we should try to follow the suspects when they leave the lodge.”

I had said that, hadn’t I?

“I brought a swimsuit,” Rosie said. “Because, yes, there’s always a place to swim.”

Flopping an over-easy egg onto my toast, I thought it over. “Why don’t the two of you go? That way you can split up if you need to. Divide and conquer.”

“What are you going to do?” Nanna asked.

“Probably take a nap. Watch some cartoons.”

“But the game’s afoot!” Nanna looked a little put off.

“She’s pulling your leg, Nanna,” Rosie said.

I looked at the guests. If Rosie and Nanna were shadowing Gloria, Emma and Meg, that left me Steven to work on.

“There’s another suspect.”

“Steven,” Nanna whispered.

“From his conversation, I think all I would really do is eliminate him,” I said.

“Do you think Emma and Gloria are in cahoots? Or any of the girls?” Nanna asked.

“I’m not sure how,” I said. “It would be a good thing to find out.”

“Check,” Nanna said. “Maybe we should get to the hot springs first. Lay in wait.”

I chewed on my eggy toast. “Survey the place for a spot to hide and listen. Give yourself some time to formulate a scheme. I say go for it.”

“C’mon, Rosie, let’s grab the swim togs and beat feet,” Nanna said.

Rosie stood up. “You got it, Boss.”

With a smile, Rosie winked at me when Nanna turned toward the guest area.

Still sitting, I studied Steven. His face was downcast. None of the guests tried to buoy his spirits like they did Gloria. Not even Emma, and she was his aunt.

But in talking with Emma, she seemed to think of Steven more of a usurper than a surprise relative. With Gloria, she was on an even footing. They were both minority shareholders. And maybe, just maybe, she was trying to talk Gloria and the other shareholders into some kind of corporate coup.

I never studied business, so I was out of my depth. I didn’t know the ins and outs—especially the cut-throat kind. Whatever happened there, I would have to wait for it to shake out before I could figure out what it meant.

Not long after, I saw Nanna and Rosie head out the door.
